Dental implants are one of the most successful procedures in medicine, and that sentence hides two different questions. Will the implant survive? Almost always. Will the whole restoration, crown, abutment, gum and bone, stay healthy for decades without attention? Only if you look after it. Here is what the numbers say and what "failure" actually looks like.
The survival numbers
Long-term studies and systematic reviews commonly report implant survival above 95 percent at ten years and in the low nineties at fifteen to twenty years. Modern rough-surface titanium implants from established manufacturers have decades of published follow-up. Early vs late failure
Early failure happens in the first few months, before or during integration. The implant never bonds to bone. Mechanical problems that are not failures
- Loose abutment screw: tightened in minutes, more common with cemented crowns.
- Chipped ceramic: repaired or crown remade.

- Fractured acrylic bridge: temporaries especially; the final bridge is designed to resist this.
What a warranty is worth
Many clinics, including reputable Colombian ones, offer a warranty on the implant fixture (often five to ten years, sometimes lifetime on the implant itself via the manufacturer) and a shorter one on the prosthetic work. Read the conditions: they usually require attendance at maintenance visits and exclude smoking-related failure. For international patients, ask how the warranty is honoured: return trip at reduced cost, a partner dentist at home, or replacement components shipped to your dentist. A warranty that only works in person on another continent is worth less than it looks.
How to make yours last
Clean under the bridge daily (water flosser and interdental brushes), see a hygienist twice a year, wear the night guard if you grind, do not smoke, and get a bitewing X-ray every year or two so bone loss is caught early.
