Getting New Teeth in Colombia: How It Actually Works, Start to Finish

Colombia is not the cheapest country to replace teeth. Mexico border towns and parts of Asia can undercut it. It is the place where verification is easiest, the flight is shortest, the time zone is yours, and the price is still roughly a third of US self-pay. Here is how the whole thing works, in the order it happens.

Why Colombia, in three facts

• The system. In its 2000 World Health Report, the World Health Organization ranked Colombia's health system #22 in the world and #1 in the Western Hemisphere, ahead of the United States. The ranking is old; the training pipeline and specialist culture it reflected are not.
• The hospitals. Colombia has multiple Joint Commission International accredited hospitals, and Medellin and Bogota have large private hospital systems where sedation cases can be done with anaesthesiologists. JCI accredits hospitals, not dental clinics; ask where your surgery happens.
• The registry. Every dentist and specialist is listed in ReTHUS (rethus.gov.co). It is public. Verify before you book, anywhere in the country.

How our vetting works

We are based in Medellin. Before we introduce a clinic we visit it, meet the surgeon, confirm ReTHUS registration and specialty, see the sterilisation area and the lab, ask which implant systems are stocked, and ask how international patients are followed up. Clinics that will not answer or will not let us in do not get introduced. We do not take payment from you; the clinic pays a referral fee if you go ahead, and you pay the clinic's published price.

The process

1. You send what you have. A panoramic X-ray or CBCT from home if possible, otherwise photos and a description. Through the contact form or WhatsApp.
2. Remote review. The clinic reviews and sends a preliminary plan and range, stating what depends on the scan.
3. You book. Flights and accommodation. We can point you to recovery-friendly apartments near the clinic; a driver meets you at the airport.
4. Trip one. Day 1: CBCT and final plan. Day 2 or 3: surgery. Days 4 to 8: reviews, temporary adjusted, swelling down. Fly home around day 8 to 10 for full arches, day 5 to 7 for single implants.
5. Healing at home. Three to six months. Your home dentist has the file. The clinic is reachable on WhatsApp.
6. Trip two. Five to seven days for the final bridge or crowns, if needed.

Medellin vs Bogota

Both cities have strong implant centres. Medellin is smaller, warmer year-round, easier to move around, and has a large expat and medical-tourism infrastructure, which is why we are based there. Bogota is the capital, colder and at altitude (about 2,640 metres), with more hospitals and a wider choice of specialists. Altitude can matter if you have heart or lung conditions; mention it. Cali is a third option with good specialists and lower prices, less international infrastructure.

What it costs, all in

A single implant trip typically totals $3,500 to $5,000 including flights and a week's stay. A full arch, two trips, typically $13,000 to $17,000 all in. Two arches, $24,000 to $30,000. Practicalities

• US and Canadian citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
• Direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Atlanta, Houston and others; three to five hours.
• Same time zone as US Eastern for most of the year.
• Pay the clinic in pesos by card or transfer; a multi-currency account such as Wise avoids most bank fees.
• Bring your medication list, any recent bloodwork, and a companion if you are having sedation.
